Praetorian Prefect

Praetorian Prefect
Civil official who governed one of the four great praetorian prefectures (the Gauls, Italy, Illyricum [qq.v.], and the East) from the fourth to seventh centuries. A praetorian prefect supervised all aspects of civil administration, from the grain supply to judicial and financial matters. Under praetorian prefect were the vicarii of dioceses (qq.v.) and the governors of provinces (q.v.). Constantinople and Rome (qq.v.) each fell under the separate administration of an urban prefect, the Eparch of the City (q.v.).
